The du'a for parents is “Rabbir-hamhuma kama rabbayani saghira” — “My Lord, have mercy on them both, as they cared for me when I was little” (Qur'an 17:24).

رَبِّ ارْحَمْهُمَا كَمَا رَبَّيَانِي صَغِيرًا
Rabbir-hamhuma kama rabbayani saghira
“My Lord, have mercy on them both, as they cared for me when I was little.”
What it means
“Allah, please be kind to my mum and dad, like they looked after me when I was little.”
When we say it
Any time — many children say it after salah or at bedtime.
How to teach it in 3 steps
Step 1: Show baby photos and talk about how your child was cared for when they were tiny.
Step 2: Rock your arms like holding a baby on “rabbayani saghira”.
Step 3: Add it to the bedtime routine, followed by one thing they love about their family.
Questions parents ask
Can my child say it for grandparents or carers?
Children can make du'a for anyone they love, in Arabic or in their own words. This du'a from the Qur'an speaks about two parents (“them both”), so ask your teacher how to say it for one parent, grandparents or carers.
Where is it in the Qur'an?
Surah al-Isra, verse 24, right after Allah asks us to be kind to our parents and not even say “uff” to them.
