Eid al-Fitr for kids
Eid al-Fitr is the joyful day that ends Ramadan. Families give Zakat al-Fitr, wash and dress in their best, eat a few dates, say the takbir, go to the Eid prayer, and spend the day visiting, sharing food and giving gifts.

What is Eid al-Fitr? (for kids)
Eid al-Fitr is the happy day at the end of Ramadan.
We wake up early, wash, put on our best clothes, eat a date or two and go to the Eid prayer.
Then we visit family and friends, share food and gifts, and thank Allah for helping us through Ramadan.
Eid traditions little ones love
- Decorate the night before. Bunting, lights and paper lanterns go up on Eid eve, so children wake up to a changed home.
- Something new to wear. Dressing in your best for Eid goes back to the time of the Prophet Muhammad, peace be upon him (Sahih al-Bukhari 948). It doesn't need to be expensive — new socks or a hair clip still feels special.
- Dates before the prayer. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) would not go out on the morning of Eid al-Fitr until he had eaten some dates, an odd number of them (Sahih al-Bukhari 953), so many families do the same.
- The takbir on the way. Saying “Allahu Akbar” together on the walk or drive to the Eid prayer.
- A different route home. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to come back from the Eid prayer a different way from the one he went (Sahih al-Bukhari 986) — many families enjoy turning it into a little adventure.
- Same-spot photo. One photo in the same spot every year — lovely to look back on as they grow.
- Henna on paper. For little ones with sensitive skin, draw henna patterns around a traced hand on paper instead.

Eidi, and a little for others
In many families, children receive Eidi — a gift of money from grown-ups. It's a lovely chance to teach three jars:
- Spend — something they choose for themselves.
- Save — for something bigger later.
- Share — a coin for sadaqah, so someone else has a happy Eid too.
Bring the Ramadan sadaqah box along on Eid morning and decide together where it goes.
