Du'a for kids · Waking up & getting ready

Du'a when waking up

When we wake up we say “Alhamdu lillahil-ladhi ahyana ba'da ma amatana wa ilayhin-nushur” — thanking Allah for giving us a new day. Little ones can start with just “Alhamdulillah”.

“All praise is for Allah, who gave us life after He had made us die (in sleep), and to Him is the rising up.”

For little ones

What it means

“Thank You, Allah, for waking me up to a brand-new day!”

The moment

When we say it

As soon as we wake up, before we hop out of bed.

Learn the word: Alhamdulillah

Teach it

How to teach it in 3 steps

  1. Step 1: Say it softly as you open the curtains, so it becomes the sound of morning.

  2. Step 2: Start with the first word, “Alhamdulillah”, and add a little more each week.

  3. Step 3: Ask: “What are you thankful for today?” and let them answer in their own words.

Questions parents ask

My child is only two. Is this du'a too long?

Start with “Alhamdulillah” on its own. Keep saying the full du'a yourself each morning; children pick up the rest by hearing it.

Why does it talk about dying?

The Qur'an describes sleep as a little like death: Allah takes our souls while we sleep and sends them back when we wake up (Qur'an 39:42). For young children, “Thank You, Allah, for waking me up” is enough.
