What it means for little ones

Before we eat, we wash our hands and say “Bismillah”. We eat with our right hand and take food from the side of the plate nearest to us. We don't grumble about food we don't like. When we finish, we say “Alhamdulillah”.

From the Sunnah

Where it comes from

Our Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) told a young boy: say Bismillah, eat with your right hand, and eat from the part of the dish nearest to you.

Sahih al-Bukhari 5376

  • What's your favourite food that Allah made?

Little table-setters

  1. Step 1: Your child sets the table: one plate, cup and spoon for each person.

  2. Step 2: They put a Bismillah card in the middle of the table.

  3. Step 3: Everyone sits, your child leads “Bismillah”, and the meal begins.

  4. Step 4: At the end, they lead “Alhamdulillah” — and get a big thank-you for helping.

For parents: Be gentle with little ones still learning to use a spoon, and with left-handed children — practise the right hand without pressure. Families and madhhabs differ on details; ask your teacher.

Questions parents ask

What if my child refuses a food?

The Prophet (peace be upon him) never found fault with food — if he liked it he ate it, and if not he left it (Sahih al-Bukhari 5409). Teach a kind “No, thank you” instead of “Yuck!”.

Should I insist on the right hand for a toddler?

Model it and guide gently. Small hands are still learning — praise every try.
