  • Before getting into the car
  • Before opening a book or starting homework
  • Before wudu and before anything good

Du'as that use it: Du'a before eating, Du'a if you forget to say Bismillah, Du'a for leaving home

Teach it

How to teach Bismillah in 3 steps

  1. Step 1: Make it the family's “starting word”: before food, the car, the bath, the bedtime story.

  2. Step 2: Let your child be the one who says it for everyone at the table.

  3. Step 3: When they forget, smile and say it with them — no telling-off.

Questions parents ask

Bismillah or “Bismillahir Rahmanir Raheem”?

Both begin with Allah's name. The short “Bismillah” is what we say before eating and everyday actions; the full version opens the surahs of the Qur'an. Children usually learn the full one when they start reading Qur'an.

What does each part mean?

“Bi” means with or in, “ism” means name, and “Allah” is Allah's name — so “in the name of Allah”.
