What does Alhamdulillah mean?

“Alhamdulillah” means “all praise is for Allah” — a big “thank You, Allah!”. We say it after eating, after sneezing and whenever something good happens.

  • الْحَمْدُal-hamduall praise and thanks
  • لِلَّهِlillahis for Allah

Read the boxes from right to left, just like the Arabic.

For little ones

What it means

“Thank You, Allah!”

Did you know? It is one of the first words of the Qur'an: Surah al-Fatiha begins “Alhamdu lillahi Rabbil-'alamin” after the Bismillah.

The moments

When we say it

  • After eating or drinking
  • After a sneeze
  • When something good happens
  • When someone asks “How are you?”

Du'as that use it: Du'a after eating, Du'a for sneezing (and the reply), Du'a when waking up

Teach it

How to teach Alhamdulillah in 3 steps

  1. Step 1: Say it out loud when good things happen — sunshine, a hug, a found toy.

  2. Step 2: Play “Alhamdulillah for…”: take turns naming something you're thankful for.

  3. Step 3: At the end of every meal, let your child lead it for the family.

Questions parents ask

Do we say Alhamdulillah when things go wrong too?

Many Muslims do — it reminds us Allah is still looking after us. With little ones, start with the happy moments.

Is it the same as “thank you”?

It's thanks and praise to Allah. We still say “thank you” (or “JazakAllahu khayran”) to people who help us.
