اللَّهُمَّ صَيِّبًا نَافِعًا

Allahumma sayyiban nafi'a

“O Allah, let it be a pouring, helpful rain.”

Good to know: In Sahih al-Bukhari the Prophet (peace be upon him) said “Sayyiban nafi'a” when he saw rain. Many families, following Hisn al-Muslim, begin with “Allahumma” (O Allah) — ask your teacher which to use.

For little ones

What it means

“O Allah, please make this rain good for us, the plants and the animals.”

The moment

When we say it

When we see or hear rain begin to fall.

Teach it

How to teach it in 3 steps

  1. Step 1: Run to the window together when it starts to rain, and say it with your faces to the glass.

  2. Step 2: Talk about who the rain helps: flowers, trees, birds, farmers — and us.

  3. Step 3: Put out a cup to catch rain and check it later — a reminder of the du'a.

Questions parents ask

Is rain a good time to make du'a?

Yes — many scholars mention rain as a time when du'a is hoped to be accepted. A lovely moment to ask Allah for something together.

What if my child is scared of thunder?

Stay close and keep your voice calm. Explain that Allah sends the rain to help the earth, and say the rain du'a together.
