How to say Alif
أَلِف
Alif
Alif has no sound of its own. Give it a vowel mark (it then wears a little hamza, ء) and it says a, i or u. After another letter it stretches the sound: ba becomes baa.
Did you know? Alif is a straight line, just like the number 1. It's the first letter of the alphabet and the first letter of the word Allah.
Also written Alef.
Alif in its four shapes
ا is one of the six letters that never join the letter after them, so it really only has two looks: plain (alone or at the start) and joined from the right (middle or end).
a, i, u: Alif with harakat
Add a little vowel mark and ا becomes a sound you can say. Fatha on top says a, kasra underneath says i, and damma on top says u. Tap each one.
Coral = fatha (a), blue = kasra (i), green = damma (u). How harakat work →
