Tips for the letter

Saying and writing Alif

How to say it

Alif has no sound of its own. Give it a vowel mark (it then wears a little hamza, ء) and it says a, i or u. After another letter it stretches the sound: ba becomes baa.

Don't mix it up

Alif is a plain straight line. Laam (ل) is a line too, but with a hook at the bottom.

Hear Alif and its picture words on the letter Alif page.

How to use it

For grown-ups

  • Every row starts on the right. A small sticker on the right-hand margin is a great reminder.
  • Say the sound each time: “Alif… carries a, i or u — and the long aa”.
  • Trace the model letter with a finger first, following the arrows, then use a pencil.
  • Use a thick crayon or triangular pencil for little hands — and stop while it's still fun.
  • Print at 100% ("actual size"). Ink-saver line art is the default, so colouring in is part of the fun.
