بِسْمِ اللَّهِ وَلَجْنَا، وَبِسْمِ اللَّهِ خَرَجْنَا، وَعَلَى رَبِّنَا تَوَكَّلْنَا

Bismillahi walajna, wa bismillahi kharajna, wa 'ala Rabbina tawakkalna

“In the name of Allah we come in, in the name of Allah we go out, and in our Lord we put our trust.”

Then greet the family

السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ

Assalamu alaikum

“Peace be upon you.”

Good to know: Some hadith scholars grade the chain of this du'a as weak. Saying Allah's name as we come in is firmly taught (Sahih Muslim 2018), so “Bismillah” and the salaam are a perfect start.

For little ones

What it means

“With Allah's name we come home, and we trust Allah to look after us.”

The moment

When we say it

As we come in through the front door — then we say “Assalamu alaikum” to the family.

Learn the word: Assalamu alaikum

Teach it

How to teach it in 3 steps

  1. Step 1: Make coming home a little ritual: door opens, du'a, then a big “Assalamu alaikum!”

  2. Step 2: Toddlers can start with “Bismillah” and the salaam — the rest comes with time.

  3. Step 3: Let your child be the one who says salaam first to whoever is home.

Questions parents ask

What if nobody is home?

We still say salaam. The Companion Ibn 'Umar taught saying “As-salamu 'alayna wa 'ala 'ibadillahis-salihin” — peace be on us and on Allah's good servants — when coming into an empty house (Al-Adab al-Mufrad 1055). Ask your teacher if your family uses another wording.

Why mention Allah's name when we come in?

Remembering Allah as we come in and when we eat fills the home with good — the Prophet (peace be upon him) taught that it leaves Shaytan with no place to stay and no dinner in our home (Sahih Muslim 2018).
