Greeting with salaam
In Islam we greet people with “Assalamu alaikum” (peace be upon you) and reply “Wa alaikumus-salam”. Children can practise by saying salaam first when they meet family, friends and teachers.

What it means for little ones
Muslims greet each other with “Assalamu alaikum” — “peace be upon you”. When someone says it to us, we answer “Wa alaikumus-salam”. Saying salaam with a smile makes people feel welcome and loved.
Where it comes from
Our Prophet (peace be upon him) taught that spreading salaam helps us love one another.

Questions parents ask
Who should say salaam first?
Anyone can — and it's lovely when children learn to say it first. Our Prophet (peace be upon him) taught that the younger greets the older, the one walking past greets the one sitting, and a small group greets a bigger group (Sahih al-Bukhari 6231).
Should my child say salaam to strangers?
Follow your family's safety rules. Practise with family, friends, teachers and people at the masjid.
