Du'a for kids · Through the day

Du'a when you feel angry or upset

When we feel angry we say “A'udhu billahi minash-shaytanir-rajim” — asking Allah to keep us safe from Shaytan. The Prophet (peace be upon him) taught that saying it helps anger go away. Sitting down and taking slow breaths helps too.

أَعُوذُ بِاللَّهِ مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ

A'udhu billahi minash-shaytanir-rajim

“I seek refuge with Allah from Shaytan, the rejected one.”

Good to know: All feelings are okay. This du'a helps us choose what to do with the angry ones.

For little ones

What it means

“Allah, please help me calm down and keep me safe from Shaytan's tricks.”

The moment

When we say it

When big angry or upset feelings start to bubble up.

Teach it

How to teach it in 3 steps

  1. Step 1: Practise when everyone is calm, not in the middle of a meltdown.

  2. Step 2: Pair it with a calm-down move: sit down, take three slow breaths, then say it.

  3. Step 3: Say it yourself out loud when you feel cross, so your child sees it working.

Questions parents ask

Is it wrong for my child to feel angry?

No — feelings are normal. The du'a is a tool for what we do next: calm down, then use kind words.

My child is too upset to say anything. What then?

Hold them close, breathe slowly together, and say it quietly for them. Talk about it later when everyone is calm.

Where does this du'a come from?

Two men were arguing near the Prophet (peace be upon him), and one became very angry. He said that if the man said “A'udhu billahi minash-shaytanir-rajim”, his anger would go away (Sahih al-Bukhari 6115, Sahih Muslim 2610).
