Islamic words for kids · Plans and mistakes

What does InshaAllah mean?

“InshaAllah” means “if Allah wills”. We say it when we talk about something we plan to do later, because only Allah knows what will happen.

Read the boxes from right to left, just like the Arabic.

For little ones

What it means

“If Allah lets it happen.”

Did you know? The Qur'an teaches us not to say “I will do it tomorrow” without adding “if Allah wills” (18:23–24).

The moments

When we say it

  • Talking about tomorrow: “We'll go to the park, inshaAllah”
  • Making a promise
  • Planning a trip or a visit
  • Hoping for something good

Du'as that use it: Du'a for breaking the fast (iftar)

Teach it

How to teach InshaAllah in 3 steps

  1. Step 1: Add it every time you talk about plans — children learn it from hearing it.

  2. Step 2: Sing “InshaAllah Tomorrow” and make a list of tomorrow's plans together.

  3. Step 3: Show that you keep your word after saying it — it's a promise to try, not a polite “no”.

Questions parents ask

Is InshaAllah a polite way of saying “no”?

It shouldn't be! It means “I'll really try, and I trust Allah with the rest”. Keep your promises so children learn it means yes, if Allah wills.

Is it one word or three?

In Arabic it's three words — in, sha'a, Allah. In English people write it as InshaAllah or In sha' Allah.
