What's on the poster

  • Every line of the adhan in Arabic, with transliteration and a simple meaning
  • How many times each line is called (×4, ×2 or ×1)
  • A 'We say' column: we repeat the same words, and say 'La hawla wa la quwwata illa billah' at lines 4 and 5 (Sahih Muslim 385)
  • The extra Fajr line: 'Prayer is better than sleep!'
  • When we hear the adhan: stop and listen, say the words back softly, then send salawat on the Prophet (peace be upon him) and make du'a

Where the words come from

Sources

Qur'an verses are copied letter for letter from tanzil.net or quran.com, and du'as and hadith from sunnah.com. The reference is printed on the poster, with a transliteration and a simple meaning. Where schools of thought differ on small details, follow your teacher.

How to use it

For grown-ups

  • Hang it where your family hears the adhan, from the masjid or a prayer-time app, and read along line by line.
  • Give each child a job: one calls a line, and the others answer with the words in the 'We say' column.
  • Learn one new line each week until your child knows the whole adhan and the replies.
  • Some schools of thought say parts of the adhan a little differently; follow your teacher.
  • Print at 100% ("actual size") on thick paper, or laminate it for a busy wall. For a big classroom or masjid poster, use the 18 × 24 in PDF at a print shop.
