What's on each page

  • A big model ي with a green start dot and arrows showing which way to write

  • The picture word يَد (yad, hand) and a box to draw it
Tips for the letter

Saying and writing Ya

How to say it

Smile and say y, as in 'yellow'. After a kasra it makes the long ee sound, as in feel.

Don't mix it up

At the start or middle of a word ي looks like ب with two dots below. On its own it has a curly tail.

Hear Ya and its picture words on the letter Ya page.

How to use it

For grown-ups

  • Every row starts on the right. A small sticker on the right-hand margin is a great reminder.
  • Say the sound each time: “Ya… y”.
  • Trace the model letter with a finger first, following the arrows, then use a pencil.
  • Use a thick crayon or triangular pencil for little hands — and stop while it's still fun.
  • Print at 100% ("actual size"). Ink-saver line art is the default, so colouring in is part of the fun.
