Tips for the letter

Saying and writing Ayn

How to say it

Squeeze the middle of your throat and say 'a' — a bit like a tight 'ah!' when something surprises you. There's no English letter for it, so listen and copy.

Don't mix it up

غ is ع with one dot on top.

Hear Ayn and its picture words on the letter Ayn page.

How to use it

For grown-ups

  • Every row starts on the right. A small sticker on the right-hand margin is a great reminder.
  • Say the sound each time: “Ayn… a squeeze in the throat (no English match)”.
  • Trace the model letter with a finger first, following the arrows, then use a pencil.
  • Use a thick crayon or triangular pencil for little hands — and stop while it's still fun.
  • Print at 100% ("actual size"). Ink-saver line art is the default, so colouring in is part of the fun.
