Today's mini-lesson
Iftar is the meal at sunset when the fast ends, often when we hear the Maghrib adhan.
The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) used to break his fast with fresh dates; if there were none, with dried dates, and if there were none, with a few sips of water.
Many families start iftar the same way today and say a du'a before eating.

Count the dates
Put dates on a plate — one for each person at iftar. Count them together, then let your child pass them round with a smile. For under-fours, take out the stone and cut dates into small pieces.
Date-stone garden
Look closely at a date: the skin, the stone, the shape. Plant a clean date stone in a pot of damp soil and keep it watered all month. It can take a few weeks to sprout, so be patient!
